Christmas markets are not just about food and drinks – although mulled wine and roasted almonds are undoubtedly part of the experience. You can also purchase handmade gifts and Christmas decorations there. They offer a rich cultural program, from carol singing to theater performances and children’s workshops. Which Czech Christmas markets are worth visiting?
Prague – more than Old Town Square
The Christmas atmosphere in Prague is magical. However, the Christmas markets are not only about the Old Town Square. When you’re in Prague, you should definitely visit there, but Prague offers much more. The Christmas markets at Náměstí Míru near the Church of St. Ludmila or the picturesque markets at Prague Castle ensure that Christmas experiences in the capital go far beyond. You’ll come across Advent stalls at Anděl, Jiřího z Poděbrad Square, and on Kampa as well. Prague is simply full of Christmas spirit.
Brno – the city of Turbomošt
Christmas markets in the South Moravian metropolis have their own charm – and not only thanks to Turbomošt. Christmas stalls can be found on náměstí Svobody, Zelný trh, Dominikánské náměstí, near the Old Town Hall and Moravské náměstí. Since you are in Moravia, you will taste the mulled wine in all its forms – red, white and pink. Besides enjoying the Christmas atmosphere in Brno, you can also contribute to a good cause. Thanks to the Daruj kelímek (Donate a cup) project, a refundable deposit can be turned into a good deed. You can contribute to 18 charitable organizations.
České Budějovice – ice rink on the square
Southern Bohemia is beautiful – Tábor, Písek, Hluboká nad Vltavou… You can’t go wrong with any trip there. When it comes to Christmas markets, České Budějovice reign supreme in the south. During Advent, you can even ice skate there. The ice rink is located right on Přemysl Otakar II Square.
Pardubice – advent with the taste of gingerbread
Gingerbread belongs to Christmas – and to Pardubice. So where else can you try this traditional Christmas treat? Pair it with a quality gingerbread latte, and as a souvenir you can take home a ceramic mug with the inscription Advent s vůní perníku. You’ll encounter the Christmas atmosphere not only in the square but also, for example, at the Automatic Mills or at the castle.
Liberec – escape to the hills
Head towards the mountains – or at least to Ještěd. Perhaps you’ll encounter snow during the advent season. While you’re there, the Liberec Town Hall deserves your attention – you won’t find one like it anywhere else. Right in front of it, you’ll find annual Christmas markets with an observation wheel.
